When people first watch/read
anime/manga, usually the very first thing that they mention is that
they have huge
eyes. Of course, this is true. The main reason behind the big eyes
is to show how young and innocent the characters are (Notice that
the chibi-versions of anime characters usually have really
big eyes).
Of course, not every
anime follows this rule. For example, Hayo Miyazaki (Nausicaa
of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke) doesn't
use very big anime eyes, and neither do the Rurouni Kenshin OVA
or Perfect Blue. But keep in mind that all of these anime
are very serious and are more dramatic than comedic. So, if you
plan of drawing something serious, you may consider not drawing
the eyes very large.
You really should
find your own style of drawing anime eyes. It's actually really
fun once you get the hang of it. Look at other various anime works
(such as CLAMP; their eyes are beautiful), and learn from them.
It really isn't drawing the eye that's hard, but the proportions
and the emotion that the eye is supposed to hold.
This
right here is how the eyes should be properly measured. Notice that
each of the eyes are 2cm, and that the space between them are also
2cm. Typically, the space between the eyes should measure to be
about the same size as the eye itself. You don't need to measure
the eyes everytime you draw them, but you should consider the size
of the eye when leaving a space between them.

This
eye shows an emotion of calmness. It can also be a happy eye. Notice
that the pupil is large and soft, and that the bottom lid is straight
instead of curving downwards. This gives the eye the appearance
of being semi-closed. The eyelash is also vital to the emotion of
the eye; it's curved gently upwards with no interruptions or sharp
movements.

Of course, this eye is angry. Not REALLY angry, but perhaps a little
annoyed. A REALLY angry eye would have dialated pupils, however
this pupil, like the calm eye above, is still rather soft and gentle.
The eyelash is the most essential part of an angry eye. It's dark
and curved suddenly into the upper lid.

This eye is my upset eye. The pupils are large and soft, but like
the anger eye, this eye is effected most by the eyelash. The eyelash
is VERY similar to the anger eye, except that instead of being curved
into the upper lid, it's curved away from the lid and up a little
bit. The eyelash isn't as sharp as the anger eye either.

Unlike
the other eyes, this eye's pupil is dialated. This and a high eyelash
gives the appearance of a shocked/suprised eye. When an anime character
is shocked, the pupil just keeps getting smaller and the eyelids
get bigger. It's actually a pretty funny eye. :)
What
about closed eyes? Well, here's a full face with closed eyelids.
Notice that you can no longer see the bottom lid, however, you can
see the upper lid. Also, this character is looking pretty annoyed/fed
up. That's done by mixing some of the eyelash techniques. Notice
that if you took away the eyelashes, she would just appear to be
sleeping, but the eyelash ads some of that vibrant flavor. *^__^*
Experiment
with different eyes. Try mixing the eyelashing, the pupil size,
etc. You may be suprised at what you might find. :)
